AN AESTHETIC HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE:THE COQUETTE EDITION

by HQ

A curation of presents fit for the likes of Marie Antoinette.

Welcome to tmrw’s 2022 Holiday Gift Guide. This year, we’re thinking about aesthetics: how we curate, collect, and covet material cultures in service of crafting and reflecting our identities. Let us take you on a journey through the surfaces and textures which defined 2022 – from the reclamation of the coquette, to the affected irony of blokecore, to the indie sleaze resurgence, and beyond. It’s a reflection of the ideas, trends, and communities which have blossomed in our cultural dreamscape – but mainly, it’s a guide to the things we’ve loved this year. We know you’re going to love them too.

On the first day of the holidays, tmrw gives to you… The Coquette Edition.

A ‘coquette’ has, for a long time, been a slightly demeaning term for a ‘flirtatious woman’. But in 2022, the word entered a new era in the form of a TikTok-driven aesthetic where romantic hyperfemininity is celebrated and hedonistic pleasure comes with a side of satin, bows, and lace. You’ll know a coquette from their love of soft, shiny, smooth textures; they’ll always look their best in a fur coat and lace stockings; and the desert island meal looks like something out of Marie Antoinette. The coquette exists outside of gender and sex boundaries, outside of objectification, and are instead focused on the delight which can be found in beautiful things. Give them something to flirt with this holiday season with our coquette gift guide.

Orseund Iris’s silk set

Orseund Iris embody the coquette aesthetic – the brand started out making low-key corset tops, worn by the likes of Emily Ratajowski and Sami Miro, and their core collection keeps the same sensibilities: sexy but powerful, structured but comfortable. The Le Club Top is 100% silk charmeuse – a cropped top which feels like a silky t-shirt. Its high collar and ballerina vibes are balanced out by the déshabillé sensuality of the keyhole back and the long wrap-around ribbons, which can be tied multiple ways for different looks. Paired with the coquette’s dream, the Ballerina Wrap Skirt in Ivory, a satin bias-cut skirt tied with flirtatious ribbons, it’s the perfect matching set for the coquette-about-town.

Swedish Stockings

Swedish Stockings are known as the world’s greatest tights – bringing together coquettish glamour and comfortable practicality. Tights are one of those things we replace year after year, with little thought given to the environmental impact of that. They ladder, they sag, they tear, they bobble, and then they get thrown in the landfill – in fact 8 billion pairs of tights are produced, worn and discarded each year. But Swedish Stockings are created to last and last, seeing the coquette through years of cocktail parties, walks along the Seine, and mysterious dalliances. The Olivia tights in ivory are semi-opaque, pairing beautifully with party shoes, a silky slip dress, and the softest, fluffiest fur coat. Coquette-perfection with a clear eco-conscience.

Hasanova’s Peach Silk Bow

Show your favourite coquette that they’re the real gift – with a bow on top. Specifically, the Hasanova bow in peach silk, a luxurious light bronze silky hair bow with an easy to attach clip at the back. We love the multi-wearing functionality of this super-tactile, super-timeless piece: clip onto a ponytail, use it to create a half-up, half-down style, or pin to the end of a braid for a flirty finish.

Simone Rocha is bringing a whole new meaning to clutching your pearls. This heart-shaped bag is playful and glamorous, a lustrous accessory for the hopeless romantic. Inspired by the baroque era – the coquette’s dream historical period – this evocative piece takes on the sheen and luminescence of a pearl. The ideal size to fit their most beloved accouterments – a signature lipstick, a tortoise-shell comb, a travel-sized sample of Chanel No.5 – and take them from day to night, in whichever glamorous city they find themselves in.

Love Stories’s Cherie lingerie set

The coquette aesthetic might be luxurious, but there’s no need to sacrifice comfort. The Love Stories bralettes are soft, unwired, and come in different shapes and fits, suitable for everyone. The Cherie set is the colour of an oyster shell, cracked open: a comfortable bralette in a delicate lace floral pattern, finished with a scalloped, eyelash lace trim. The plunge v-neckline flirts with romance, while the adjustable hook and fixed shoulder straps offer support without restriction. Made with recycled yarns, for the conscious coquette.

Chloé catwalk book

Chloé is a brand that should take a special place in the dictionary of every coquette. Founded by Gaby Aghion, a godmother of ready-to-wear garments, and a talent incubator for many contemporary designers including Karl Lagerfeld, the house specialised in dreaming up made-to-measure ethereal experiences. Thames & Hudson knew there was more than eye meets to Chloé and created a book featuring their best catwalks and giving Suzy Menkes, one of the most precious fashion journalists, the voice in the foreword. Let yourself let loose in a luxurious world of Chloé full of flowy silhouettes, delicate material and gentle femininity. Behind the layers of satin, Parisian elegance and haute bohemia hides great power. Hedonistic liberation.
