As I exited the underground station and approached The O2 Arena in London, it was evident that the house was going to be packed for the fantastic show about to take place.
For the first of a few O2 10th Birthday shows, English alternative rock band alt-j played their only indoor UK show of 2017 with newcomers Blaenavon.
Blaenavon, having recently released their debut album, That’s Your Lot, kicked off the show with a bang. Their sound reminds me of the roots of alternative, such as The Cure and Joy Division. However, with their older influences, they also bring upon a fresher, more guitar-heavy take, which drives their performance. Highlights of their live set include their first song, ‘Take Care’, as well as ‘Orthodox Man,’ ‘Alice Come Home,’ and ‘Prague ‘99.’
As soon as alt-j hit the first notes of ‘3WW’ off their most recent release, Relaxer, it was clear why the group had the honour of performing at one of three of The O2 Arena’s 10th Birthday shows. Their set consisted of a mix of tracks off all three of their albums, which showed just how many hits the band has had since they first debuted. Highlights of their live set included new single, ‘In Cold Blood,’ ‘Dissolve Me,’ Matilda,’ and closer, ‘Fitzpleasure’.
Not only were they musically fantastic, but their production quality was absolutely beautiful. Stands with moving lights surrounded each member of the band, as well as a screen with projections behind them. The colours of the set changed with each song and perfectly fit the band’s unique relaxed electronic/alternative vibe.
