It’s the final night of Loyle Carner’s UK tour and it seems as though the south Londoner has saved one of the best dates till last.
Manchester’s O2 Ritz is a sell out, and as the familiar intro to ‘The Isle of Arran’ blares through the venues speakers there’s an inescapable air of excitement. Ben Coyle-Larner enters, and from the offset is an energetic and animated performer. Swiftly covering the stage, which is decked out like a worn front living room, the young rapper creates a lively atmosphere whilst still maintaining a real humbleness that shines through the frank stories he shares with his audience.
Yesterday’s Gone is an honest and emotionally transparent debut offering that only intensifies when performed live. Wearing his heart well and truly on sleeve, Carner has brushed away the arrogance often associated with British hip-hop and ignited a new fire within it.
