This February saw the first UK exhibition of work by visionary US artist KAWS. Born in 1979 in New Jersey, KAWS is a leading arts of his generation, renowned for his articulate and powerfully colourful paintings, and sculptures.
Post-graduation from the New York School of Visual Arts in 1996, KAWS used graffiti as a his first foray into public art. Over time KAWS developed his trademark characters with skull and crossbones and X eyes which adorn his much sought-after works.
The exhibition expanded across the length of the park; walking through the Lower Park visitors cannot help but stop and admire a group of monumental sculptures in bronze, fibreglass, aluminium and wood. The Longside Gallery, at the top of the park, features different incarnations of KAWS’ most famous characters in further sculptures and a series of new paintings on canvas.
I captured some photos of the exhibition during a visit on a typically wet Yorkshire day, but this only added drama and comedy to the outdoor sculptures
The exhibition will be at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park until June 12th, for more information visit www.ysp.co.uk/exhibitions/kaws
