Harry Styles does not have a great reputation for timing. Remember that time at 2014’s Brit Awards when he left his band mates hanging on stage to collect the award for Global Success? ‘Sorry, I was having a wee!’ he declared, and obviously as a nation we swooned for the curly haired sweetheart.
Since, we’ve had Zayn take a step in another direction, seen Harry take on the film industry, and Louis and Niall have dabbled with their solo music. Now, Liam has just welcomed his own baby boy into the world with Cheryl Cole. (How have two members of One Direction got babies, when a few short years ago Harry could barely hold his own bladder?). The baby was born on 22nd March, but the news broke on 25th March – coincidentally the same day as Zayn left the band two years ago, and then released Mind of Mine the year after. And the day that Louis will play his biggest solo performance of all time – whilst also remembering his late mother on what would have been her birthday.
In another strike of strange timing, within the same hour of Liam wishing his first ‘happy Mother’s Day!’ to his partner: a new promotional trailer, presumably for his solo single debut, unveiled Mr Styles opening a door to blinding light. Over on Instagram, the One Direction website link has been removed from his bio, and three white square images uploaded making a wall and marking a fresh start. The alignment leaves space for artwork – album or single – to build a new aesthetic.
HS1 has become the codeword and the countdown to April 7th begins. But it begs the question: are the announcements completely coincidental in their timing? For a band who are renowned for forgetting each other’s birthdays, they sure do manage to collide in each other’s schedules and events. A PR nightmare or a PR goldmine? Either way, March 25th has been rewritten. Sorry, Zayn.
