Mathieu Lehanneur’s 50 Seas is coming to Paris.
The series, which is made up of 50 ceramic works inspired by the various shades and nuances of different oceans and seas – from the Gulf of Guinea to the Bay of Bengal – will showcase at Christie’s Auction House from January 18 in the French capital. Using cutting-edge satellite photography, Lehanneur has created a “chromatic topology” of the world’s ocean, with each piece unique to the geography of its respective environment.
Speaking on the project, Lehanneur explains: “Although most of the earth’s surface is covered with water, often we only see a simplified and reduced impression of it. The infinite colour variations of the water reveal our planet’s true complexity.”
50 Seas is showing at Christie’s Paris from 18 January – 2 February.
