At the bright and youthful age of eighteen, Luchana Shaw has just dropped her debut single ‘Bad Habits’.
Fresh out of BRIT school, and performing at LU, the rising star takes centre stage taking the likes of SZA and Jorja Smith into her own blend of traditional alt-pop.
‘Bad Habits” slick delivery shimmers and saunters whilst you’re sitting in the sun drinking your exotic cocktails. But be warned, the moment you feel comfortable, the chorus takes you for a ride with booming drum beats and electronics.
Receiving her debut radio airplay from BBC Radio 1Xtra, LU documents a realistic convivial experience before the smooth guitar of the verse is replaced by obnoxious synths and irony in the hook. She explains: “This track is very much about me embracing my youth, but also being realistic with expectations in everyday experiences.
“The irony in the hook basically is a result of me being very observant of what’s going on around me – where people are basically fronting and acting like money grows on trees so blowing it is the norm, when in fact there’s a reality in play that dictates how you actually need the money to live.”
Despite her observant nature, LU reveals there’s another, more coming-of-age aspect to the track: “There’s another side to ‘Bad Habits’ where I’ve definitely fronted that I have this boujee lifestyle, but in fact it’s just me and a couple friends acting like #queens in the back of an Uber, but hey it’s all fun really.”
