Recently opened by Niall Davidson, NUALA is an all-day restaurant and Irish bar in the heart of East London.
By day, NUALA promises comforting flavours cooked over a giant fire pit, with modern riffs on classic combinations. By evening NUALA BAR beckons; an underground Irish bar with live music daily, too many whiskeys to mention, cocktails, pints and – of course – Tayto’s.
With a sweeping concrete bar, and sleek relaxed seating, the restaurant is centred around the brick-lined open fireplace. With dishes like clams in pistachio beurre blanc, steak tartare with Guinness sauce, squid and bacon broth, and veal sweetbreads with cauliflower rarebit, NUALA promises to mark a new stage in the evolution of all day British and (Irish) bistronomy.
The kitchen is run by Colin McSherry (Fat Duck, Dinner by Heston); the floor managed by Alice Dell’Orco and John O’Dowd (Bistroteque), with wine by Honey Spencer (Noma Mexico) and bar by Spencer Large (Barbecoa). Share a T-bone steak with saison sauce and fries, or tackle suckling pig and fireplace cabbage amongst friends, all with a progressive wine list that celebrates well-made favourites and emerging regions. After plates are cleared the fires stays lit for post dinner chat and cocktails.
Lunchtimes are all about casual and hearty food, while mornings offer a relaxed space to meet over world class coffee, or dig into proper fire-cooked Irish breakfast classics and brunch punches. Plates and bowls are handmade by ceramicist Tom Butcher, while grills and ovens are custom made in Madrid.
From 5pm NUALA BAR opens Via the City Road entrance and the shenanigans begin. The ideal place to start or seal a night, NUALA Bar promises strong drinks, atmosphere and revelry paired with a dash of Irish music culture. A whirlwind of music, craic and Irish devilment, the bar hosts live bands every night.
Featuring a changing roster of London acts playing an eclectic mix of original acoustic sets and well-loved covers, NUALA Bar’s live music provides the perfect backdrop for letting your hair down. Squeeze into snugs for rounds of punch or pull up a stool at the large mahogany bar and sip on a favourite Irish whiskey from an extensive list. Intricately created and simply served punches are available for up to five people to share. Examples from the menu include a citric, yet bold Irish whiskey punch, mixed with Guinness & black tea; a classic clarified milk punch incorporating cognac, rum & sherry; as well as a spicy, Mexican-inspired serve with chillies, smoky mezcal & tomato water.
Refuel with items from NUALA Bar’s food menu, including scampi-fried quail eggs and pastrami brisket and three cheese grilled sandwiches, or simply enjoy a pint with a packet of Tayto’s. NUALA, come for the day and stay for the night. NUALA is now open for lunch, dinner and late night fun. The breakfast and brunch menu launches February, with opening hours extending to seven days a week.
