phantom runners unveil future pop cut, ‘first time’

Phantom Runners are completely of their moment. The moniker of future-pop forerunner, Adal, this musical pseudonym infuses 80s electronica, R&B, as well as the synth-laden reflectiveness of contemporary dream-pop, to create a sound that remains entirely fresh and forward-thinking.

First Time is an elevating helping of keys, 808s and genre-drifting maunder. The new track, which is the first taste of an upcoming collaborative album, features the excellent Brooke Bailey on vocals. It’s an amalgamation of sound and influence, which falls into a cute, tidy pop track – managing to sound equal parts Caribou, Blood Orange, Years and Years and The 1975.

According to Adal, the song is about ‘chasing that first feeling you get with someone, that initial rush’ – which is a fitting notion when considering Phantom Runners, too. Here, you have a movement dedicated to exploring newness. Taking established sounds and genres, First Time makes it sound like, well, the first time that you’re hearing them. First Time is fun – and Phantom Runners are having fun making it. Watch this space.
