This is San Holo’s culture.
The Dutch DJ has been making waves online with latest track Light, a post-pop electronic mishmash that’s just as comfortable on the radio as it is blaring out of the speakers of your favourite club. San’s – real name Sander Van Dijck – solo moniker is born out love for the Star Wars franchise (attracting legal threats from Disney in the process, though they eventually eased off) and takes the fascination with the other-worldly intergalactic into his music. From old-school hip-hop remixes to epic dance floorfillers, San Holo doesn’t like to do things conventionally.
These are his cultural highlights.
“I love watching movies to give my head some rest and kind of distract myself from everything I still have and want to do. There’s many movies I really like, but one that really sticks out to me is Seven Pounds. If you haven’t seen it, go watch it and cry.”
“I’ve actually not been on vacation for years so have no idea! All I know is that I really like sunny places like California which I’ve spent a lot of time in since I started touring. I’m from Holland and the weather is quite rainy most of the year, sometimes it feels like we only have 2 months of summer so California is a very nice change!”
Song to be sad to:
“Sufjan Stevens – John My Beloved. Actually, his entire Carrie & Lowell album is incredibly beautiful for being sad too. I’ve discover and mostly listen to sad music most of the time – usually pleasant, sad music. Also, try Sigur Ros. They’ve hugely inspired me throughout the years. And then please check out one of my all-time favourite albums by Explosions in the Sky, The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place – it’s such a beautiful story. I guess there’s just too many to pick from!”
“I’m not really a big reader and I can’t really remember the last time I read a non-fiction book I enjoyed.”
“Hawaiian pizza – but without ham. And I know this is a very touchy subject right now but yes, it’s true, pineapple does belong on pizza. It tastes great so why not? I’ve been a vegetarian for over 10 years now – hence the ‘no ham’ thing – and now as I’m writing this I’m really starting to crave some pizza.”
“Sigur Ros. Like I said earlier, they’ve been a huge musical inspiration for me for some time now and getting to see them live was such an experience. You can’t quite capture the magical vibe of their live performance through words to be honest. I just remember getting absorbed into this wall of sound. They would go from huge climaxes to the most fragile and tiny sounding sections. I’ve never seen such a huge crowd be so quiet and full of awe.”
Place to get coffee:
“Honestly? I don’t really have one. As long as it has lots of milk and sugar I’m happy! That said, I’m definitely more of a green tea latte kind of a person because of the sweetness – I like sweet.”
