Do you believe in destiny? What if we all have one chance at greatness, one shot at the big time in whatever our particular calling may be? How would you feel if you realised that it had slipped through your fingers like so many grains of sand?
These are the questions that inspired Soleima’s (formerly of Danish hip-hip heroes Flødeklinikken) new solo single Wasted. The song comes on strong, a heady witch’s brew of reggaeton, pop, dub and hip-hop, saccharine sweet vocals and lurching off-kilter sunshine synth like a Major Lazer X Lily Allen X All Saints collaboration.
Listening to the track with a fine British summertime shower pattering against the window makes you really appreciate the tropical depths of the production from Vera (Liss, MØ) and Luke. Behind the scenes lurk SEGA-like sound effects, echoing percussion and mutated cowbells which are all somehow nostalgic yet cutting-edge.
Soleima certainly knows how to light up a room and she is in fine form on Wasted, effortlessly laid back and defying classification, escaping pigeon holes and Copenhagen into a land of endless summertime. If this second solo single is her one shot at the big-time then she couldn’t be more on target.
