Arguably, we stepped back in time earlier this week when a certain article was triggered.
Though, one step back in time that we’re willing to embrace is the one that comes with the anticipated return of The Kooks.
After teasing us with throwbacks into the back catalogue our patience waiting for new music has been applauded. Shortly after the brilliant ‘Naïve’ celebrated its eleventh birthday, the band have rewarded us with new cut; ‘Be Who You Are’.
As loveable as ever; all chanting chorus, ‘da da da da da da da’s and feverish hook, The Kooks continue to throw their candid romantic stories into the air, and leave a stream of colour. ‘Be Who You Are’ is a scrawled, contradictory love note to a girl with a confused identity, as the turbulent lyricism ‘you’re a poet, you’re a fake, you’re a star’ carries a message: to be true to who you are.
They’ve still got the charisma, the energy, the instant connection. Hold the cheese.
The Kooks’ ‘Best Of’ tour sold out in just a couple of days, reinforcing that we’re all clinging to the nostalgic, bittersweet songs – desperate to just move in our own way.
After spending a decade together, the Brighton quartet have announced a compilation ‘Best Of…So Far’ album, due 19th May. Featuring fan favourites including ‘Naïve’, ‘You Don’t Love Me’, ‘Seaside’ and ‘Ooh La’, you’ll also find ‘Be Who You Are’ alongside as-yet-unheard ‘Broken Vow’.
‘Be Who You Are’ is triumphant. Catch yourself basking in the familiar sound, shamelessly reminiscing the first loves, the first gigs, and the first break ups that The Kooks got you through.
