The first trailer for Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit has finally landed – and boy, have we missed her.
In a world where political cinema remains heavy-handed and we have no choice but to get our action fix from Vin Diesel franchises (cover your ears John Wick, we don’t mean you), the first glimpse at the director’s forthcoming project is a welcome return for the Oscar-winner. With its threatening intensity, the trailer screams vintage Bigelow.
Detroit sees the filmmaker overseeing a stellar cast, including: John Boyega, Will Poulter, Algee Smith, Jacob Latimore, Jason Mitchell, Hannah Murray, Kaitlyn Dever, Anthony Mackie, John Krasinski, Jack Reynor and Ben O’Toole. It also signals another collaboration with long time partner Mark Boal, with the former journalist handling the script.
The film tackles the infamous police raid of an unlicensed bar that triggered what came to be known as the 1967 Detroit Riot – one of the largest citizen uprisings in American history. Right now, films like Detroit have never been more important. Thank god we’ve got Bigelow overseeing it.
Detroit hits cinemas on August 4th.
