In her new song, accompanied by a unique and wonderfully weird video, Kali Uchis collaborates with Rico Nasty to bring us ‘Aquí Yo Mando’. Previously collaborating and sharing stages with the likes of Jorja Smith, Diplo, Tyler, The Creator and Snoop Dogg, the Colombian star sings the new track almost exclusively in Spanish. Celebrating women in a position of power, domination and assertiveness, Kali Uchis sings in translation, “I command, here I command / I make the decisions”. Her soft yet seductive vocals in combination with Rico Nasty’s rap verse make for a polished song with the perfect flow.
Kali Uchis shared her To Feel Alive EP earlier this year, a collection of demos made during her time in quarantine, featuring a mix of new creations and unreleased songs loved by her fans. Writing on Twitter, she explained how she “recorded all of it alone, in my room, bcoz i won’t roll out my real album right now, but wanna give my babies Something”.
For the ‘Aquí Yo Mando’ visuals, Kali teamed up with director Philippa Price, creating an eerie, playful and flawlessly stylised video. Set in a clinical looking room full of tech equipment and dripping blood, early on in the video we see Kali Uchis and Rico Nasty stepping over the body of an unconscious man, dressed in structured looks and sharp enough heels to kill.
A dream collaboration with a fierce and eccentric video, giving us hints of ’90s nostalgia: it’s just what the post-lockdown world needed to refresh it.
