For the latest episode of our all-new podcast with the innovative fashion house we talk to boundary-breaking artist Congee...

Since they launched in 1991, Armani Exchange has been one of the most vital trend-setting brands around: inspired by street-style, subcultures and city life, who better for us to team up with to curate your new ones to watch. Having paid homage to all that music and culture has to offer for over three decades through the power of fashion, the worlds have collided in the form of a must-listen podcast, In Conversation with Armani Exchange.

Hosted by tastemaking DJ, presenter and broadcaster Emerald and in collaboration with all of us at tmrw and AWAL, the podcast introduces some of the most talented rising stars in the UK music scene. For our second episode, we meet Congee, the innovative London-based artist and producer.

Self-named after the comforting Chinese dish, Congee explains in our new episode that his moniker celebrates both his heritage and also his upbringing: “I was thinking about my earliest memories from when I was younger: things that have stuck with me, that I still have a part of me now. Congee, a Chinese porridge, was always made for me when I was younger and my mum still makes it for me now. As a name, I like how it looks when you write it out in English, it’s satisfying.”

Congee tells our host Emerald, “I remember playing guitar when I was 13/14, my mum forced me to go to Chinese church with her. Everyone else was playing football on Sundays so I was like ugh… I didn’t understand what they were saying so I wasn’t sure what was happening most of the time, but I remember this one guy, he had a guitar. And that was the most interesting thing that would happen on my Sundays and that started me wanting to play guitar.”

All in all, the artist muses on where his drive comes from, explaining “I think what I realised growing up is that I just really like making things. I love creating things, whether it’s music or making clothes or drawing or anything else. I think what’s happened in my life is just that music is what I’ve focused on so far.”
