Courtnie has the kind of voice that makes you feel like you’ve known her forever. The first time I listened to her new track ‘Tell Me’, it felt like a childhood memory. Her voice is completely hypnotic, and the lyrics are meaningful: vulnerably and effortlessly displaying the feelings of losing a lover. Following the release of her track ‘What’s Up’, a powerful celebration of Black women, she has come back with another wonder. Dripping with soul, this track is warm and sweet, perfect for a long hot summer.
An expressive combination of R&B, soul, and jazz; a mesmerising blend that makes it very hard to stop listening. Lyrically, it evokes a feeling of loss whilst simultaneously arousing lust and love. Speaking about the song, Courtnie explains “‘Tell Me’ is about getting vulnerable and being honest about wanting someone back and wanting them to want you too.” She also speaks about falling in love with her Dad’s record collection and her Grandma’s church voice, and this is apparent throughout her vibrant releases.
Reminiscent of Celeste and Mahalia, Courtnie has found the sound that works incredibly well for her voice. Her lyrical candour smoothly flows alongside the R&B melodies and brass arrangement, and teases what’s next to come.
