Ahead of her debut single, we catch up with the actor, singer, songwriter and TikToker you need to know.
Beginning today is the long-awaited musical career of polymathic princess Gia Lily with her debut single ‘Signs’. Having been making waves on TikTok over lockdown and beyond, the 22-year-old newcomer is ready to take her music to the next steps and we can’t wait to see what’s to come.
In her first track, ‘Signs’, Gia teases her pastel-tinged pop perfection through a melancholic breakup track: “‘Signs’ is about hoping your ex picks up on the signs you’re trying to send them. They’re with someone new, but you know he’s still caught up on you as well. I wanted to turn that feeling of pain and heartache into something that can be used as a form of empowerment.”
Garnering over 5.8 million likes on TikTok already, it’s clear the people want a lil bit of Gia and we’re right there with them. On top of making some seriously catchy tunes, Gia Lily has also been killing the game in acting after taking on a role in Cognition alongside Andrew Scott and Jeremy Irvine as well as starring in the upcoming sci-fi feature film Light.
We can’t wait to keep our eyes peeled for the next Gia Lily release, so we caught up with the rising singer-songwriter to look towards her very bright future…
What can we expect from ‘Signs’?
This song is about knowing your ex is still very much caught up on you (“you’re looking at my stories”, “I know that you’re watching from a distance”)… but he’s with someone new. You’re sending him signs to let him know you KNOW he’s still there! I wanted to take the pain and turn it into beauty. Think sad-girl pop turned sassy-girl pop.
Talk us through the inspiration behind your debut single.
I had the melody for the pre-chorus going through my head in a dream when I was sleeping, and when I woke up I instantly started putting together the lyrics. 10 minutes later I had the pre-chorus and chorus written as you hear it in the song now! It was the quickest I’ve ever written a song haha – and I’ve still got the original voicenote from when I woke up!
What do you envision the future of music to look like?
After what the world has gone through these past couple years, it would be great to see social media creating more contact from artists to fans. Like seeing artists work on live virtual performances so that fans from around the world feel as though they’re still part of it would be mad. I know many people are finding it hard to adjust to the world as normal again, so to include them in this regard where they feel safe also is important!
What is one change you’d love to make to the industry?
I think artists including their fans more in their journey is insane and is something I’d love to see more of! Like letting their fans help write songs, hearing what they have to say and what topics they’d like to hear being discussed in music. It helps create a community. This is something that’s super important to me, as they are the ones who make this happen so it’s a way of giving back too.
If you could collaborate with any musician in the future, who would it be and why?
Miley Cyrus. She has always been a huge idol for me. It definitely helped that I used to want to be Hannah Montana! The direction her music has gone in now is the genre I grew up on, so a collab with Miley would be a dream.
Where would be your dream venue to play?
Ooo. Wembley or Madison Square Garden!
Who are you betting on for future stardom?
I’ve loved watching Mimi Webb’s journey this past year, and I’m always excited to see what she does next!
Where do you hope to be in the next year?
Right now I’m enjoying the process of developing myself as an artist, but in a year I’d love to be performing festivals and maybe a tour around the U.K.! The goal is to just keep having fun and making music.
The next 5 years?
Continuing on this journey, and maybe a bigger tour! 😉
