Hot off the release of 'Angry Man' and news of their upcoming debut mixtape, 'Paradise Heights', KAWALA take a look into our crystal ball.

After the year (and then some) that we’ve just had, a lot of us have turned to music to raise our spirits, if you’re one of us looking for a cheer up look no further than KAWALA. Made up of vocalists and guitarists Daniel and Jim, the two were later joined by Reeve (bass), Ben (drums) and Dan (electric guitar), all with the aim of bringing a bit of sunshine into our lives. Dropping new single ‘Angry Man’ today, the band also revealed their debut mixtape, Paradise Heights, is on its way too. “With Paradise Heights we wanted to create this Kawala universe for people to want to be a part of”, they explained, “We loved the idea of creating something music led but bigger than that. We just want to use this concept to show people that we’re a super tight group of pals making music and having a damn good time doing it.”

When you press play on their tracks, it’s definitely clear how good a time the pals are having, their sound is playful, euphoric and full of hope: three things we all need right now. “The one positive to the last year and half was having the chance to take a step back, reflect & organise,” KAWALA confide, “We had no idea that right under our noses, we had the perfect 6 track reflection of what we do already recorded & ready to go & we can’t wait to get it out!”

First up is ‘Angry Man’, all about “our process of trying to understand why there is simply so much anger in people, & most prominently men. We wrote it a few years back, but it somehow feels more relevant than ever.” It’s true, the track is poignant as it is infectiously poppy, encapsulating KAWALA’s unique energy perfectly. To celebrate the release, we caught up with Daniel, Jim, Reeve, Dan and Ben to carry on that hope, and face forward to their future…

What do you envision the future of music to look like?

We honestly don’t mind what the future of music looks like as long as gigs return! We’d love to see a swing back to the old school consumption of albums as well, as there’s really no better way to get to know an artist.

What is one change you’d love to make to the industry?

More women in positions of power. We’re super lucky to have a woman head our record label & it’s such a refreshing change.

If you could collaborate with any musician in the future, who would it be and why?

It’d be an absolute dream to work with Sylvan Esso. We’ve been obsessed with them since their first album & the way they write pop is the best in the game!

Where would be your dream venue to play?

If we’re taking dreams, then it has to be the pyramid stage at Glasto. There really is no bigger achievement for British artists.

Who are you betting on for future stardom?

First name that comes to mind is Griff. Her songwriting/melody writing is unreal & her songs are insanely catchy. She also just seems like a great person so no reason for her not to reach the highest heights!

Where do you hope to be in the next year?

Hopefully with our debut album out, touring it all over the UK & Europe.

The next 5 years?

Hopefully with three albums out featuring Sylvan Esso, touring it all over the world!

Press play on KAWALA’s ‘Angry Man’ below now and stream their debut mixtape PARADISE HEIGHTS out 23rd July.
