Feel the freedom of sleepless nights through Scottish duo’s ‘SICK’ EP.
Every emotion has a flipside to it. Fascinated by the phenomenon, Julie and Shaun created a project where they can freely express their fears, obsessions and tomorrow’s aspirations: LOVE SICK was born. Partners in life and art, they let us in their relationship to show the good, the bad and everything in between. It’s a mesmerising pop statement with a black diamond in its core that we can’t take our eyes off. The gem shines brightest in their new EP SICK.
SICK was a fruit grown out of lockdown nights filled with longing for the past reality and the liberty to step outside your house (and comfort zone) like we used to do. They praise the blissful hedonism of going out and simply getting drunk, forgetting about all that is going on outside those booming walls. Though the record’s born out of frustration and alienation of the moment, it remains ever relevant. After all, we all need to escape once in a while and get a little wild with a sweetheart by our side.
Let us fall for LOVE SICK as they tell us all about their breaking up/making up dynamic, machines-takeover and the desire to hit the road…
Congrats on the new single! Talk us through the inspiration behind ‘Get Wild’.
Thanks! We were right in the middle of lockdown and although we had each other to get through, the feeling of being stuck inside and also missing normality and freedom came out in the song. We wanted this to sound like the first night out after lockdown
What can we expect from your Sick mixtape?
It’s pop music with dark left of center production and songs about breaking up and making up. It’s like a window into our relationship together. We sing about the good, bad and ugly side of love. We’re happy together but we sing a lot about breaking up and maybe that’s what keeps us together. We just let it live on the page.
What do you envision the future of music to look like?
I feel like there are gonna be robots writing hits and performing them! I think an artist will come along blow our minds and then turn out to be a robot. Also with our ever shortening attention span songs are just gonna keep shorter. Intros will be a thing of the past if they aren’t already. Maybe virtual reality gigs will catch on but it will feel super realistic.
"It's like a window into our relationship together. We sing about the good, bad and ugly side of love."
What is one change you’d love to make to the industry?
More money and recognition for the people who actually write the songs. The way things are split has been so bad for so long and that is something that has got to change.
If you could collaborate with any musician in the future, who would it be and why?
Calvin Harris would be sick. We’re both Scottish so we have that in common. I just love how he’s developed from his first album and managed to stay relevant for so long
Where would be your dream venue to play?
The hydro in Glasgow is somewhere we used to drive past when first started making music and we always said we’d play it one day!! I also think the Barrowlands is one that would be a dream to play!
Who are you betting on for future stardom?
Someone who we’ve got really into in the last few months is the artist Amaarae. To us it feels like she’s famous already, maybe she is! But if you’ve not heard her music, check it out. Melodies and production are great.
Where do you hope to be in the next year?
We hope to be on tour, it’s always been a dream of ours and one of the reasons we got into music in the first place as we love travelling. We love playing festivals which I guess is a part of touring! Also, we want to have an album out.
The next 5 years?
Still on tour playing bigger venues, headlining festivals and maybe have 5 albums out! But hopefully still being able to make music first and foremost.
