FACING FORWARD WITHVX DUSE

by Kitty Robson

Get to know the rising musician using his genre-bending music to celebrate London's vibrant Latinx community.

Growing up bilingual, VX Duse learnt just how to blend two worlds into one: speaking both Spanish and English, it’s no wonder that today in 2022 he’s making music that fuses together a multitude of genres into one flawless package. From R&B to trap, Latin beats to UK drill, VX Duse pays homage to both his South London home and Colombian heritage through boundary-breaking creations, just like his latest single ‘Spinnin’.

Talking about his new track, VX Duse explains, “‘Spinnin’ is a love story where the love is undeniable. It holds all the power between you and another – the type of love that drives you crazy with thoughts and desires and is so pure when you’re with that person. Regardless of any external situations and temptations, the only thing real to you is the way you feel about each other. It’s an exploration of the ideas of the foundation of love and its strength for the right person, that even if there is conflict or some separation at times, there’s only that one person who is on your mind.”

We catch up with the rising star in our FACING FORWARD series to find out just what the future holds for VX Duse…

Congrats on ‘Spinnin’! Talk us through what inspired you to create it…

‘Spinnin’ was inspired by emotions that were running through my head when in life a partner can feel the need for reassurance when the other is busy building and working on their career. But regardless of options, distractions, and temptations, it has always been them.

What message do you hope people take away from the track?

When they feel that sense of care and love for a person… That it’s: that person, no one else. Identify and let them know because life is short and not always guaranteed!

How do you feel like your music has evolved so far?

Progressive. I’m just always working and experimenting. I don’t like making the same thing twice so I’m always finding new directions and approaches to try and give me different feels as my life goes with the music. It’s my therapy and canvas to express my ideas whether simple or complex, while still keeping an element of my bounce and presence.

What do you envision the future of music to look like?

For me, incorporating live music more with my roots and with western approaches extensively but also to always be stripping & tapping in on what I grew up on as I grow as a musician.

What is one change you’d love to make to the industry?

To encourage the translations of ideas on all types and taking a risk on the fusions because those creations are the result of influence which then transpire and birth/pioneer sounds/genres.

If you could collaborate with any musician in the future, who would it be and why?

Don Toliver would be one definitely. His sound, texture and presence on songs are just one of one: he’s too cold!

Where would be your dream venue to play?

Glastonbury! Growing up I’ve always been inspired by it or the O2, London is one of the ones I’ve had dreams about and would one day be honoured to touch that venue with the sounds I’ve created. It’ll make the visions 3D!

Who are you betting on for future stardom?

Ajradico! Came across his tune recently ‘waste no time’ been checking his catalogue since and it’s flames!

Where do you hope to be in the next year?

Always tryna be in better spaces and always grateful for every stage so taking everything as it comes while sharing the sounds into the world.

The next 5 years?

Established or in the route of establishment and involved in music projects, tv shows, and movies.
