It’s tough to break through the bedroom pop bubble in the year when DIY musicians are overflowing our playlists. To burst out, you need to go full force. Like ST LUNA, indie newcomer and a complete musical package. He’s your do-it-all man to bits. From writing, producing, recording to performing, ST LUNA makes sure that each time we get a full-on intergalactic experience.
Today, he leaves his orbit and pops onto ours to share a new single, ‘lightspeed’. An alt-pop tale of sustaining affection in changed circumstances.“I’ve spent a lot of my relationship with my girlfriend living in a different city to her,” ST LUNA says. “When I wrote ‘lightspeed’ we had gone from seeing each other every day during summer to once a month at most. We were living on different planets and our relationship existed in 2D.”
Despite the drama of the situation, the song stays high-spirited, playing around with woozy guitars and layered cheeky electronic beats. Existing somewhere in between Lauv’s and Easy Life’s sonic universes, it embraces that breezy kind of pop experience with hearty, straight-shooting lyrics.
“‘lightspeed’ was my way of expressing to my girlfriend how I was feeling about the distance, as well as letting her know that (even if I lived on the moon) I’ll always be there for her when she needs me,” ST LUNA shares on the backstory. This raw, personal storytelling is what shines through most of his work, from released this year ‘wanderlust (demos)’ EP to the newest single. It’s what will keep our eyes peeled for his forthcoming mixtape in early 2022.
For now, we’ll stay on ST LUNA’s line. Apparently, if the connection is strong enough, no intermission can interfere. No matter if you’re oceans, or whole galaxies, apart. Eventually, you can meet in the middle. Lighspeeding to each other.
