21-year-old pop singer and songwriter Salem Ilese has just debuted the accompaniment to her breakout success single, ‘Mad At Disney’, and it is worth the wait. The viral hit was released back in July and is centred around Disney’s fixation on creating unrelatable fairytale endings as well as the stale portrayal of women as helpless damsels in distress. Poking fun at these age-old stereotypes, Salem has brought us a playful new video for her empowering track.
Born and raised in Mill Valley, CA, Salem has always been immersed in the world of music, and says she has been “making music for longer than [she] can remember”. Growing up, her parents played David Bowie and The Beatles and she was put into music lessons from an early age.
“Filming the ‘Mad at Disney’ music video was an exhilarating experience”, Salem said, speaking on the video. “I’m still not sure how we pulled it off in one day. The whole process was a very refreshing change from my usual day, which consists of writing songs in my bedroom. Thanks to everyone who made it possible for me to step out of my comfort zone!”
Since the release of ‘Mad At Disney’, the track has accumulated over 58 million Spotify streams and has earned Salem a place on Apple Music’s premier playlist Today’s Hits. You may have heard it via TikTok, where the song went just a little bit viral… Named as one of 2020’s “fast-moving viral hits” by Rolling Stone and “a hell of a pop song” by Stereogum, Salem Ilese is set to go far – and we can’t wait to watch.
