After dropping ‘Sole Of Your Shoe’, KiD RAiN finished off 2021 with a whole load of promise, teasing what’s coming next (and just how good it’s going to be). A vibrant track which balances delicate vocals with relatable lyrics, the thoughtful new star describes it as the “most honest and vulnerable song” he’s ever written. Co-written, co-produced and mixed the hit track with the Grammy-nominated Mitch Jones, it’s clear KiD RAiN is a multifaceted one to watch.
Having risen to fame after his cover of Counting Crows’ ‘Accidentally In Love’ went viral, and making popular TikTok videos since 2020, KiD RAiN knows how to captivate an audience. Up next, he’s ready to “keep writing/releasing music” and really hopes to “get on the road next year and play some more shows and meet some more amazing people who have been supporting me”. We caught up with KiD RAiN to find out just what music means to him, and how it drives him forward…
I’ve never known a time where I didn’t want to make music! I still have the same drive and passion to make music now as I did when I first started. The best feeling in life is finishing a song that you love and listening to it on repeat for weeks. That’s the feeling I’m chasing.
I remember sneaking into the primary school music room at lunch when I was about 6 to sit at the piano. I didn’t know how to play but I was obsessed with learning. I was already learning trumpet and guitar (oh and recorder obviously!) but it obviously wasn’t enough haha!
Honest. Pop. Fun.
I guess it would only take one listen through my tunes to hear that i’m very open and honest about my past relationships, I feel that if you can’t write the whole truth, then there’s no point writing it at all. However it does get me into a lot of trouble as you can imagine ha! Also, listening to new music from other up-coming artists really inspires me, there’s so much good music coming out, it keeps me on my toes and inspires me to do better and keep creating!
The 1975 – The 1975
All Time Low – Nothing Personal
Owl City – The Midsummer Station
Busted – A Present For Everyone
The 1975 – I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it
I think it’s really important to stay connected to your audience as often as possible, the music scene has shifted from playing live gigs all over the country 20 years ago, to being present and engaging on the internet. Also I’ve learned to not undervalue the music itself, the competition is so tough, the music has to be the best it can possibly be to break through!
I can’t speak for all new-gen artists, as everyone sits in a totally different space and connects to completely different audiences. I often go Live on TikTok, and the title of the Live is “TikTok Live For Serotonin Boost”. I see/hear from a lot of people that just a need a little bit of positive energy/inspiration and I think new-get artists are in a great position to use our platforms to try make people happy, even if its for a few seconds watching a video, or for 60 minutes if they buy tickets to a show!
I think if you strip it all back, it’s just 1 guy in a room making music. There’s no ulterior motive. I’m just putting my life into an mp3. I’m not clever enough to sit and think about the message, but I guess that in itself is the message haha.
I played my first ever headline show last week. It was absolutely amazing and I haven’t stopped thinking about it, I’m going to keep working as hard as I can so that in 5 years, I’m playing those shows all over the world to thousands of people. I also want to be a stormtrooper in the next Star Wars movie so i’m manifesting that right now don’t mind me.
As I’m answering this question there is an open project file on my computer with one of the best songs I’ve ever written on it, there are also about 9 other project files just like it waiting for me to get cracking! I’m going to keep writing/releasing music, and really really hope to get on the road next year and play some more shows and meet some more amazing people who have been supporting me!
