Mavi gives listeners a sampling from his upcoming debut album with rebellious single 'Fck It Up.' The music video is debuting with tmrw today (Feb. 14).
Inhibition is not welcome here.
The “Fck It Up” video, directed by Valentin Hansen, gives Mavi Phoenix the opportunity to rewrite the past to match a more promising future. The Austrian artist begins sitting crosslegged in a childhood bedroom—complete with a lava lamp and Muhammad Ali poster—while painting.
The character parachuting from the sky serves as a transition to Mavi breaking free. He’s swinging a bat, wearing a mask, singing into a golf club. In short: he’s doing whatever he wants.
“I see your eyes all over me,” he sings into the camera. “‘Cause I am not who I should be / I wanna be ugly / Not your PYT.”
“Honestly, the ‘Fck It Up’ video is one of my favorites I’ve ever done,” Mavi tells tmrw. “I really wanted to transport and display the spirit of the album, of Boys Toys as a character also. I wanted people to see the new energy I got from rediscovering and being myself without compromises. The director, Valentine Hansen, and I clicked from the very beginning, and he just understood my vision completely.”
The full vision will be carried out on April 3, when Mavi’s debut album Boys Toys is released via LLT Records. The project is a safe space for him to make “a real statement of intent and exploration” following an Instagram announcement last month about being trans (NSFW language):
“Fck It Up” showcases Mavi embracing an identity that has always felt like home to him while exposing it for the first time to the outside world.
That reintroduction to the world will continue with live dates throughout 2020 beginning tomorrow (Feb. 15).
