For those who aren’t clued up on the wonderful world of viral memes, Osh is the proud owner of the ‘My Yé is Different to Your Yé’ freestyle that blew up quite literally overnight. Sampling the backing of dancehall heavyweight, Burna Boy, the confident lyrics and undeniable charm of Osh made for a winning combo. “I posted the video and was just about to go to sleep as I had work the next day. I always expected something and wouldn’t have posted it if it wasn’t good, but its success was a bit of a shock”.
Having racked up thousands of views and retweets in less than 24 hours, Osh knew that this was about to lead to something big. He admits “I’m a pretty chill guy, so I just went along with it”, although it’s hard to imagine anyone maintaining their cool when the likes of Stormzy start showing their support. Osh tells how “it’s overwhelming when you see people who you grew up listening to show their support. It’s really inspiring to hear him like the song as he inspired my musical journey.” If that wasn’t enough for the fleece-clad South London wonder, his smooth vocals and effortless ability to create music have also seen him sign a record deal that others could only dream of. He explains, “I only really started taking my music seriously about a year ago, so I have been blessed to be signed by Columbia. I have lots of great minds working in the background.”
Talking of great minds and how they think alike, it comes as no surprise to learn that Osh has recently teamed up with the nation’s favourite sinister detective and DJ, Idris Elba. The picture of the two posted on Osh’s Instagram secured over 15,000 likes and got commenters speculating on what it is the pair were cooking up. The end result? An insanely catchy, Idris-blessed remix of Osh’s original track. Reflecting on his time spent in the studio with “the man, the myth, the legend”, Osh says that “meeting him was great. He’s established and doesn’t necessarily have to work with me and his personality is definitely something I want to reflect in my own. He was speaking to everyone normally and, one day when I’m helping someone, I want people to feel comfortable too.”
With 2018 drawing to a close, the sleek video for My Yé is Different has achieved nearly 1.5 million views on GRM Daily’s YouTube channel, finally offering an answer to what ‘yé’ could actually be whilst displaying comments from fans crowning the track the anthem of the year. Giving us a taste of what is, without a doubt, going to be a wild ride for the artist, Osh teases, “Now that I’m combined with Columbia, what I’m working on is a secret but I’ll just say that there is even better to come. Keep an eye out.”
