tracks oftomorrow

by Kitty Robson

It's holiday season and this week's playlist is full of gifts.

Another week of internet-breaking collabs and innovative rising stars, this week’s tracks of tomorrow has got something for everyone. Whether you’re basking in the afterglow of evermore, heading to space with Kid Cudi, or imagining you’re out dancing to the disco beats of Mark Ronson, this playlist will take you on a journey of who’s who in the music world this week. So what’re you waiting for, scroll down and press play…

‘Easy’ – Troye Sivan, Kacey Musgraves & Mark Ronson

The queer, alt-pop, cowgirl collab from our wildest dreams has arrived, and it’s everything we hoped for and more. Teaming up with Troye Sivan are Kacey Musgraves and Mark Ronson on a new version of ‘Easy’, the “second” single from his EP In A Dream. A synthy ’80s track blended with a bit of classic Ronson disco and sprinkle of Spacey Kacey country is just what the dr ordered to get us through the last month of this g’damn year. Head on a journey through the darker side of a neon-lit Nashville in the Bardia Zeinali-directed music video.

‘Show Out’ – Kid Cudi, Pop Smoke & Skepta

Our favourite song from the highly anticipated Kid Cudi album Man On The Moon III has got to be the vibrant ‘Show Out’ featuring both Skepta and the late, great Pop Smoke. A track with the drill-heavy production Pop Smoke coined in his short career, intense bars and high energy, it’s a perfect amalgamation of the three rap icons so take a listen below now.

‘Daisies 2.0’ – ashnikko & Hatsune Miku

Bringing new life into the TikTok hit single ‘Daisies’, Ashnikko has teamed up with Hatsune Miku, a Japanese avatar which sings with the help of synthesiser technology. Developed by Crypton Future Media, the vocaloid software voicebank opened Lady Gaga’s ArtRave: The Artpop Ball tour back in 2014 and was set to play Coachella 2020 before the pandemic cancelled everything fun.

‘simmerDown’ – thomTide

If thomTide isn’t on your radar yet, hurry up and get with the times. An innovative creator from San Diego, thomTide brings us an impressive new offering with ‘simmerDown’: a pulsing alt-pop track showing off the unique storytelling abilities of thomTide’s songwriting. A tease of the debut project, which will be released bi-weekly over the course of a year (“If you take the analogy that the traditional LP or EP is like a “movie,” thomTide will be releasing a “TV show” of music, where a single is an episode and the seasons coincide with the seasons of the year: Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer.”) and we can’t wait to hear the rest.

‘no body, no crime’ – Taylor swift & Haim

You really thought we weren’t going to give evermore a shout out?! Think again. This new track from Taylor and Haim has been playing on our minds non stop since Swift dropped the surprise second lockdown album, and we’re sure it’s going to be playing on yours too. A throwback country vibe for the superstar, bringing out that twang the OG fans love but with a new edge. Haim bring their unique groove along too, and it makes for a match made in heaven (or maybe hell if they did do it).

‘Can’t take my eyes off you’ – Shawn mendes

We could’ve picked one of Shawn Mendes hit original songs, but this cover of the Frankie Valli classic for BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge shows a raw edge to the global singer songwriter. Making the 1967 track his own in this stripped down acoustic setting, it’s a jazzy modern reworking of such a frequently covered classic. Listen below now…

‘All Three’ – Noah Cyrus

Back this week with a brand new song is tmrw cover star Noah Cyrus with ‘All Three’, an emotive track with an equally intimate music video to go with it. Her hushed tones pine for “someone good” but the intensity rises as the outro reaches a cathartic crescendo. Press play below to get on the tumultuous journey with Noah…

‘Conversations’ – ARIES

After Aries’ acclaimed debut album Welcome Home last year, we’ve been following the genre bending artist’s journey. His latest offering ‘Conversations’ is a alt-rock-rap mix that blends his influences into a unique sound with traces of 90s vibes and 00s emo. On the subject matter, Aries explains “‘CONVERSATIONS’ is about begging for attention. Whether that be from someone in particular or more generally. It’s summed up by the lyrics in the hook ‘Conversations I could never get enough… Silence aching my bones.'”

‘WHOLE LOTTA MONEY’ – BIA

Boston born rapper BIA is back with a second EP, For Certain, and the stand out track for us has got to be ‘WHOLE LOTTA MONEY’, a simple beat-backed track which shows off BIA’s sultry and sharp bars. Also, the lyric “I put on my jewelry just to go to the bodega” definitely speaks to our lockdown aesthetic…

‘LONER’ – Maggie Lindemann

tmrw fave Maggie Lindemann finishes off this playlist and the year with her relatable new track ‘Loner’, singing of the trials and tribulations this year has given us all. Getting ready to release her debut EP, Paranoia, Maggie’s new single captures her new rocky sound and has got us very excited for the January 22nd release.
