John Lawrence Sullivan AW24:'STACK'

by Maja Bebber

John Lawrence Sullivans 2024 Autumn/Winter Collection takes inspiration from the architecture and furniture created by German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and from the artwork 'Stacks' by artist Donald Judd.

The stacking technique is embodied in men’s and women’s wear as well as in accessories and shoes. The collection is ruled by double-layered bomber jackets, collared jackets and hoodies. Shirts are not only double collared but also adorned by double ties. Pants are triple-waisted and denim skirts are triple-layered. Accessories are infinitely stackable.

Sprinkled throughout the collection are the details and textures found in furniture created by designer Arashi Yanagawaʼs favorite artists. The cantilevered jewelry, a structure seen in Miesʼs “MR chair” is one example. The curtains seen in “Café Samt & Seide” by Lilly Reich and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe are elevated directly as velvet dresses and skirts. Arne Jacobsenʼs “Ant Chair” as “three-legged” high heels, Marcel Breuerʼs “Wassily Chair” as a belt, Charlotte Perriandʼs “Les Arcs Chair” as leather accessories; the tranquil, melancholy and robust look of sensational historical furniture is reborn in wearable form.

Mies’  eminent phrase “LESS IS MORE” has been translated into original graphics by art director duo AHONEN & LAMBERG, and will appear as prints on tops and T-shirts.
