You’re in a New York bar, dusky-black tables scattered with husks of exotic fruit and musky clouds of oud. Two men sit in a satin-flecked booth, suited, discussing lush menswear. They shake hands, suit sleeves kissing.
Well, something like that. That’s how we personify the new Mr Porter x Tom Ford capsule collection, and imagine it came about. Call us romantics – but it’s easy to get swept away by the sophisticated, suede pieces and silky fabrics. It’s sartorial menswear at its finest.
The capsule launched yesterday and contains thirty-one ready-to-wear pieces, including footwear and dear, diamante accessories. Every inch of clothing is covered. There are bags, pieces of jewellery, pairs of shoes and a knitted silk scarf.
Since there’s a walk-in-wardrobe amount of garms to discover, it’s worth giving you a rundown of the items. To paraphrase Drake – let’s start from the bottom and work up to the top.
There are two pairs of shoes on offer. Firstly, there are leather-trimmed suede hi-top trainers, a high-fashion spin on Converse Chuck Taylors. Accompanying them is a pair of classic Chelsea boots, with trademark mesh sides and blocky soles.
For trousers, casual tapered jeans share the rail with wool and mohair-blend pants. Pinstriped wool trousers make up half of the slim-fit suit, a modern cut for a vintage design.
Now onto the top half. Easy to rock cotton tees and shirts are joined by a ribbed, ivory twill piece. The sweaters are opulent, to say the least: cashmere, silks and wool fabrics turn simple jumpers into standout items.
Two bomber-style jackets – one with a sherpa collar, the other with oversized breast pockets – give you layering options for days. A biker jacket completes the series, with wildly canted zips making us want to hop onto a Vespa and whizz around a Milanese evening.
Add in beige, suede pouches and backpacks, a knitted silk tie, diamond studs and cufflinks and a silk scarf, and you can accessorise and embellish the smarter cuts.
Oh, and we’ve left the best until last. It’s a tongue twister: the copper slim-fit satin-trimmed zebra-jacquard tuxedo jacket. Need we say anymore? It’s madness.
Mr Porter will be releasing a full story on the collection on Thursday, in its publication, The Journal. For now, you can check out the full capsule online and daydream away about owning a wardrobe of the collection.
We’ll save you a booth at that bar…
