The 70s are back, baby!
Now coming to a close, this September’s New York Fashion Week was, as always, the perfect start to a packed fashion month. Hailing from Istanbul, the rising design house Raisa Vanessa kicked off the first night of the festivities with a bang: think swirls, maximalism and playful designs that set the tone for the next (spring) summer of love. The twin sisters Vanessa and Raisa Sasson brought their brand to life in 2011, with a vision to cater to the modern, empowered woman who paves their own path. They design for women, by women. This collection is no different, adorning the motto “A soul in the right body, a good feeling in the right look” which perfectly encapsulates the mood of the runway.
Raisa Vanessa never fails to excite and bring the unexpected to their work. In this SS23 show, we see the sisters’ sartorial taste bring a lighthearted element back to design, reminding us fashion can still be chic, as well as fun. They are not afraid to mix patterns and textures, elegant fabrics yet bold designs, new tone combinations and inspiration from both the past and future. The sisters add a modern flare to 70s shoulder-padded silhouettes to embrace this iconic era of youth fashion with a modern twist, perfectly targeting the wearer who loves to be bold, but remain classically timeless. The colour palette is, of course, headlined by the signature 70s orange, but also features white and gold combinations, lilacs, deep blues and greens. The collection plays with contrasting colour accessories to add flare to the often monotonal looks.
Already got enough FOMO? Well, the show was followed by a NYC afterparty in collaboration with Senza Fine, the second edition of Turkish-Italian DJ Carlita’s multisensory high-fashion party concept. The event blurred the lines between fashion, music, art, design and more, and is intended to immerse the attendee in a completely different world. Amongst the experience included genre-warping performances from some of the biggest names in the electronic music and fashion scene, including Carlita herself, Heron Preston, who glamoured recognition from his 2016 namesake label, Agathe Mougin, Rony Seikaly and more. All in attendance of the show were invited to the after party to put the cherry on the cake of their fashion week experience.
We can’t wait to see what’s next for Raisa Vanessa, stay tuned on IG here, and scroll down to take a look behind the scenes with photography by Aline Velter…
