Mollie Elizabeth

Inside the Fairytale of People Pleaser

By Caroline Huckeba

For Mollie Elizabeth, fantasy has never been about pretending the world is kinder than it is. It is about finding a way to live in it. Raised on old Hollywood melodies, Disney princesses, and the strange comforts of make-believe, the singer-songwriter has built a musical universe where painful memories become dark fairytales, heartbreak arrives with theatrical strings, and the things that hurt most can be approached with a little more whimsy.

On her forthcoming EP, People Pleaser, Elizabeth invites listeners further into that universe, following her debut EP, Dirty Blonde, and “Run Rabbit.” Across its 12 tracks, she examines the promises society makes to young women, the fantasies that help us survive, and the exhausting work of trying to become someone the world will approve of. But beneath the campy imagery and playful instrumentation, something sharper is emerging. Where earlier songwriting often grew out of hurt and longing, “Kiss The Ring” marks a shift toward knowing what she wants and being unafraid to demand it.

Ahead of the EP’s October 30 release and her upcoming headline shows, I asked Elizabeth about the power of storytelling, the complicated comfort of escapism, and finding the courage to stop being a people pleaser.
